Why I dislike rebates #60

03/20/09 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
In the post from a few weeks ago, I commented on why I dislike mail-in rebates. The cheque for the rebate that sparked the comment arrived in the other day, two and a half months after sending in the form. Now I have another item to add to the list:… more »

Why I dislike rebates #59

02/28/09 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
You know how rebates work, right? You get a certain amount off whatever it is you're buying but you don't get it at the till. You need to submit some paperwork and then you'll be sent a cheque for whatever the amount was. The basic premise behind it is… more »

Ongoing "Fallout 3" Commentary

11/20/08 | by Adam | Categories: Whining, Games
Great game so far but there are two significant issues I have with it: When laden down, you move slowly. In and of itself, no big deal, but it also disables the quick move between two locations on a map. This means you need to control your nice 3D… more »

Application focus under OSX

09/18/08 | by Adam | Categories: Whining, Macintosh
For the most part I've been very happy with OSX compared to its competition. This isn't a long standing Mac fanatic thing: I couldn't stand OS9 and the prior System releases; the Mac only became an acceptable option to me after the "classic" MacOS was… more »

Apparently I really am a financial naif

06/27/08 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
Recently I changed from using a no-frills low-interest Visa card to one that apparently had a few benefits built into it. It seemed reasonable to me as I never leave a balance month-to-month so I might was well see some other benefits. more »

Skewed views of relationships

06/04/08 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
The link is to a tongue-in-cheek Gizmodo post about one of their writers throwing away DVD packaging on the request of his wife. Nothing too special there; what is interesting is in the pages upon pages of responses in the comments section. Those are… more »

On Airline Surcharges

05/27/08 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
The link is to a Wall Street Journal piece about American Airlines imposing charges on checked luggage (via Political Animal.) It's a companion piece -- at least in spirit -- to one referenced earlier here which approached the fuel cost issue from the… more »

The rumours of the recent death of "Common Sense" have been greatly overstated

05/07/08 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
Generic email forwards invariably annoy me. This recent one about the "death of Common Sense" was particularly nauseating. I had a bit of a problem with this reactionary screed and needed a new blog post, so hello there, fodder. Today we mourn the… more »

Those darn blinking LEDs

03/29/08 | by Adam | Categories: Technology, Whining
One thing that's becoming more and more prevalent are blinking LEDs on pretty much all computer equipment. As one wag put it, there's not a lot of sense in having "everything's great" lights, and that's what these are. more »

Where's the cite?

12/06/07 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
One thing I hadn't considered much when I started helping Ritchie on the blog was cites. Other than the few articles that are written purely from scratch, most entries reference some other work. In fact most reference some other work that references the… more »

Programmers in management

11/28/07 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
I've always wondered if people had the courage of their convictions to insist on a demotion in order to keep their job. Here's a case. It also leaves me wondering about the general tendency to define managers as more valuable to a corporation than the… more »

Ruddy Solaris

11/23/07 | by Adam | Categories: Technology, Whining
I have a serious love/hate relationship with UNIX and LINUX systems. Where I love them is that when they're up and running, they tend to stay that way. However, when they're not, they're nearly impossible to troubleshoot. more »

Stupid, stupid, stupid

10/31/07 | by Adam | Categories: Technology, Whining, Reviews
A year or so ago, I bought a Philips PhotoFrame (7FF1M4/37 model) as a present for a relative. It was well received and was used daily with no problems. That made it a great success in my eyes. Until tonight when I bricked it. more »

Marketing surveys: eternal damnation for television pilots

10/21/07 | by Adam | Categories: Whining
Every year, a crop of shows are made for the TV networks. Of these, only a few actually make it to air. But what happens to the ones that aren't selected? more »

"Ready, Aye, Ready" was a slogan used by Canadian politicians to indicate Canada's willingness to assist the British Empire in any conflict. It remains in use as a motto for some of the Canadian military. It has almost nothing to do with the content of this blog.
