Diet Rite Comes To Canada!

Well, at least to a store near me :)

I encountered these at the local Sobey's (anyone know what the deal is that had most but not all IGAs turning into a Sobey's?) in three flavours: cola, red raspberry and tangerine.

This is another Splenda-sweetened soft drink. (The only other ones I know of are the local Diet Orange Crush and the Talking Rain drinks at Costco) If you get an aftertaste from aspartame drinks, these are definitely worth a look.

The cola's not bad, but it's no Coca-Cola. It's reminiscent of RC Cola (no surprise, since the Diet Rite brand was a brand of RC), although a little less strong. The red raspberry is pretty good, but the clear winner of the bunch, in my opinion, is the tangerine. Tangerine flavour has a nicer "kick" to it than orange, and this is well-flavoured.

All the drinks are non-caffeinated, including the cola (which may or may not fit in with your plans), and have basically zero grams and milligrams of everything included on the nutrition label, including sodium.

I’ve seen them tucked into the shelves at the occasional Safeway.

I wish there were a way of ordering the four other flavours they have!

I really enjoy this pop but I am having trouble finding it. Sobey’s used to carry it but now it isn’t on the shelf. Does anyone know where to get it in Edmonton?

I’ve actually seen it pop up in Safeway and even the Co-op stores down here.

However, I wouldn’t fret too much over Sobey’s not having it: Sobey’s, out of all the grocery stores, has their own pretty good version of Diet Rite. It’s their ‘Freedom’ line; the Diet ones are all aspartame-based, but the Freedom ones are all sucralose/Splenda. They have Peach Freedom, Raspberry Freedom, Cola Freedom and Tangerine Freedom.

They make Diet White Grape, but as far as I’ve been able to tell, they only export the three flavours (Raspberry, Tangerine, Cola) north of the border.

Grape would be awesome :)

I have actually encountered Splenda-based Grape Crush, but it did not taste nearly as good as I was hoping, and it was only in a “four-flavour” pack including Diet Orange Crush, Diet Cream Soda and I think Diet Mug (but that has aspartame - bleh).

Re Evelyn Mitchell

I just found it in Save on Foods in Edmonton. I nearly jumped for joy when I saw it. It goes for about 5.99 a case.

Update Jan 28 2011. Talked to a person at Co-Op in Calgary and said the Diet-Rite cola is being discontinued and replaced by a Cott product. Available in 2-3 weeks.
