So that's where Giger got the idea...

09/12/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
I actually saw this description on the morphology of the moray eel in one of the Calgary free weeklies first, but Pharyngula has a better description plus I can actually link to it. Cute title aside, I'm pretty sure H.R. Giger came up with his "Alien"… more »

The "final" cut of "Blade Runner" is nigh

09/10/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
Sometimes I feel I'm the only person -- including the director -- who actually liked the film noir narration in the theatrical cut of "Blade Runner". The ending probably did improve with subsequent cuts but I felt stripping Harrison Ford's voice-overs… more »

So how's that prediction going, Dena?

They've been awfully quiet over in Annandland. I'm suspicious that there may be great evil brewing... :) more »

Kicking Horse Pass bridge open

09/08/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
When I drove through to Golden, BC, a few weeks back the new bridge was mostly built but not open. This meant I got to drive underneath it on the old highway. It's really very impressive to look up and see this huge thing towering above you. The photo… more »

Happy 1st Birthday to "Ready, Aye, Ready"

09/07/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
It's a bit of a belated wish; "Ready, Aye, Ready" turned a year old some time back in August when I was out of town. Alas I didn't get around to noting it then. Sorry, kiddo. Come to think of it, I'm not quite sure when the blog turned a year as we… more »

Bishop's "The Campus" goes online

08/19/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
I stumbled across the online version of Bishop's University's student newspaper, "The Campus." I was actually looking to see if the faculty and staff lockout at the university had been resolved (it has) but I'll take what I can get. I still have an… more »

Translation weirdities

While on Arcnet, a IRC-compatible channel populated by former Amigans, I made a slightly disparaging comment about wiener schnitzel. One of the resident German speakers responded with the word: arschgeige My German's a bit weak so I popped that into… more »

What? Now?

08/03/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
I'm not much for the various leadership, productivity and self-actualization gurus -- being obliged to read Stephen Covey’s "Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People" was a rather trying period -- but sometimes their advice isn't all bad. This one I… more »

The disappearance of the honey bee

07/23/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
There's a quote which has been circulating some time, purportedly from Alfred Einstein, which goes something like this: "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more… more »

High Tea

07/22/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
I know that Wikipedia can be dodgy on its information, but goldarnit, it's absolutely correct with this definition: High Tea (also known as Meat Tea[1]) is an early evening meal, typically eaten between 5 and 6 o'clock in the evening. It would be eaten… more »

Tolkien's "The Children of Húrin"

04/20/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri
I really only have one question about this: will it be even less readable than "The Silmarillion"? Of course, it could be as dull as the "Books of Lost Tales". "The Hobbit" was a classic; "Lord of the Rings" was a rather fine read. After that, the… more »

Yup, they think we're stupid

In my mailbox today was a letter postmarked from Spain, Madrid to be precise. I don't actually know anyone in Spain so gave it a look. Inside was -- oh, I can hardly contain myself -- a notice that I had a winning ticket in the "El-Gordo Sweepstake… more »

Fewer seats on the LRT

03/17/07 | by Adam | Categories: Potpourri, Calgary
One of the issues that's hit Calgary what with all the growth an' all is that the public transit system is overloaded. In particular, the LRT is horrible for hours around rush hour due to incredible density of usage. more »

"Ready, Aye, Ready" was a slogan used by Canadian politicians to indicate Canada's willingness to assist the British Empire in any conflict. It remains in use as a motto for some of the Canadian military. It has almost nothing to do with the content of this blog.
