When my clock radio clicked on this morning, I didn't immediately notice anything different. In fact, it took about four songs and one announcement before I realised that what I was listening to wasn't my MP3 collection.
Yup. My finely selected empty spot on the FM dial was no longer empty and had in fact been replaced by some upstart commercial entity, CFXO, out of High River. To be fair to the new outfit, there are no annoying DJs and the playlist is already contained within stuff I own.
However, it's not my little FM station. So, now the hunt begins again for somewhere empty on the dial that's not awash with harmonics from other high powered stations. That could be hard as it's getting really quite crowded out there right now. It would be great if the CRTC and the FCC could allocate a small area on the conventional FM range for personal FM transmitters but they won't; there's no money for them in that.
